How to Stop Payment of Cheque?

In case of mistake while filling or missing the cheque.

It often happens that if the account holder misplaces the cheque, he starts stopping the payment of the cheque. Sometimes, due to the filling of wrong information in the cheque, the account holder makes payment to the cheque.

Information required for stop payment of cheque request

If you want to stop payment of cheque, the account holder must have the following information before making a stop payment of cheque request online/offline mode.

  • Cheque issue date
  • Bearer’s name (in whose favor the cheque is issued)
  • Cheque number
  • Amount to be debited through cheque.
  • Account holder information

Keep in mind that once you have made the request online or offline, once the bank receives the application for stop payment of the cheque, the payment of the cheque you will issue will stop.

How to stop payment of cheque?

Stop Payment of a cheque can be requested through both online or offline means. If you have made a written mistake while filling the cheque, the bank can use the following method to stop the cheque payment.

  • The account holder can request online stop payment of cheque from a bank through internet banking.
  • Stop Payment of cheques can also be asked through mobile banking.
  • To stop payment of cheque, the account holder can call the customer care helpline number.
  • The account holder can personally visit the branch office and give a written application to stop the payment of a cheque.

Online Process of Stop Payment of cheque

Almost every bank provides various online services to its customers for their bank account-related complaints and requests. Banks also offer the benefit of stopping the payment of cheques under these services. For example, we will open HDFC Bank to stop payment of cheque requests through an online medium.

If you have issued an HDFC Bank cheque to someone for payment, but now you want to stop payment of the cheque request online for some reason, then follow the steps given below.

Step 1: First of all, activate the internet banking service to stop the payment of cheques. That is, register yourself for Internet Banking.

Step 2: Visit the bank’s official website (HDFC) to stop payment of cheque requests. The home page of the official website will open.

Step 3: Go to the login portal under Internet Banking Services and log in to your account using your password and user-id.

Step 4: After login into your account, navigate to the Pay section with the help of navigation. Here you will see the option of cheques. Click on the link for cheques.

Step 5: If you have more than one account linked with an Internet Banking service in the same bank, then from the dropdown list, select your account from which the cheque is issued.

Step 6: Click on the link “Stop Cheque Payment.” A new window will open. Fill in the information related to the reason for the stop payment of cheque in the respective column.

Step 7: Click on the Stop Payment button. The bank will accept your stop payment of cheque request, and the reference number of the stop payment cheque request will be displayed on the screen. Make sure to note down the reference number.

After successfully accepting your stop payment of cheque request, the bank will also provide the reference number on your registered mobile number. Each bank charges an additional fee for stopping the cheque payment, so before making the stop payment, you must cheque the stop payment of cheque charges of the concerned bank.

Stop Payment of cheque through Mobile Banking

In today’s digital age, every bank has launched Mobile Banking Apps to enable its customers to avail various banking services. You can download the mobile application of any bank on your Android or iPhone and get the benefit of stop payment of cheque request service of the respective bank through mobile banking.

Follow the steps given below to place stop payment of cheque requests online through the Mobile Banking Application.

Step 1: First of all, activate the mobile banking service to stop the payment of cheques. That is, register yourself for Mobile Banking.

Step 2: Download the respective bank’s application from Google Play Store or App Store on your Android or iPhone to stop cheque payment.

Step 3: Open Mobile Banking Application on your mobile and log in to your account using your password and user-id.

Step 4: After login, go to the option of cheques in the “Pay” section with the help of navigation, and select the option of ‘Cheques.’

Step 5: If more than one account is linked with the mobile banking service in the respective bank, then select the account from which the cheque book is issued.

Step 6: After this, the option of “Stop cheque Payment” will appear. Click on the link “Stop Cheque Payment.” A new window will open where I write the reason for stopping the cheque payment.

Step 7: After that, click on the button “Stop Payment.” The bank will stop the payment of your cheque on your stop payment of cheque request. Make sure to note down the stop payment of the cheque reference number. You will also receive request information on your registered mobile number and email id.

Note– Stop payment of cheque requests through the Mobile Banking service may collect additional charges by the concerned bank. This fee will be charged as per the guidelines of the Reserve Bank of India.

Stop Payment of cheque through Customer Care Helpline Numbers

Almost all the banks have been provided customer care numbers or helpline numbers by calling on which the customer can solve the problems related to the bank. Follow the steps given below to make stop payment of cheque requests through customer care or helpline number.

Step 1: First of all, call the customer care number or helpline number of the concerned bank from your registered mobile number.

Step 2: Under IVR options, select the option to talk to the customer care representative.

Step 3: Talk to the customer care customer representative and submit a request to stop the cheque payment.

Step 4: The customer care agent will assist the calling customer in making your request or registering the request, and before writing the proposal, the executive will ask about the account holder’s bank account details like account number, name, date of birth, etc. 

Step 5: After taking the above information, your request for stop payment of cheque will be registered by the customer care executive whose reference number will be provided.

Stop Payment of Cheque through Offline Mode

The consumer can also make a stop payment of cheque requests in any bank through offline mode. Almost all the banks have provided this type of service to their customers. For this, the account holder will have to go to his bank account branch, talk to the customer representative, and give a written request to stop the cheque payment. 

After his request, the cheque payment of the customer will be controlled by the bank after deducting charges to stop payment of the cheque request. Note that the additional charges levied by the bank on stop payment of cheque request depend on your amount.
